Chef Restaurants in Prague – A Complete Guide

Among the hundreds and thousands of restaurants in Prague, which have been developing at an impressive pace in recent years, chef restaurants hold a special place for me. These are refined establishments with white tablecloths and professional staff, offering a true culinary experience. A tasting menu at such places? That makes me especially happy.

Breaking News: Michelin Guide Returns to Prague

This marks a significant moment for Prague’s fine dining scene, reaffirming its status as a top culinary destination in Europe. This development is exciting for food lovers and chefs alike, as it signals increased recognition for Prague’s culinary excellence. Stay tuned for updates as the new Michelin

Guide is released!

Why Choose a Tasting Menu?

When visiting a special restaurant—one that you don’t go to every day—the desire to try all of its signature dishes can be overwhelming. I often find myself frustrated by large menus, which can be daunting for any diner. A tasting menu eliminates that stress—you sit back, and the dishes just flow. The chef decides which dishes to include, ensuring a carefully curated experience.

In this guide, I will introduce you to the most special chef restaurants in Prague. I will update the guide from time to time to keep the information current.

L E V I T A T E

A restaurant that stimulated my senses in almost every possible way.

We chose this restaurant to celebrate my partner’s birthday, arriving with high expectations for a joyous evening. The dinner started with a carefully selected, albeit small, wine list. Prices were higher than average.

The atmosphere was very quiet, almost too quiet, with recorded bird chirps playing in the background—almost lulling me to sleep. Then suddenly, the chef appeared, greeted us with a serious expression, and announced that he would be personally serving us that evening.

The dishes arrived at a rapid pace—18 courses one after the other, featuring many unique elements. Thankfully, molecular gastronomy did not make an appearance that night.

La Degustation

A restaurant that earns a Michelin star year after year—and for good reason.

La Degustation is part of the Ambiente group, which you may have read about in previous articles. They offer a six-course meal (five dishes and a dessert) that gave me a fresh perspective on the local cuisine. One of the standout dishes for me was Olomouc cheese, known for its strong aroma. The restaurant served it as a mousse with shavings of white truffle, making it absolutely delicious.

Not every dish suited my taste, but I appreciate restaurants that help me enjoy foods I wouldn’t normally like.

Grand Cru

In my opinion, Grand Cru is the most romantic restaurant in Prague.

Located in the Petrská district, which is full of hidden gems, this restaurant perfectly blends old and new—vaulted brick ceilings alongside modern decor. The menu combines Czech culinary traditions with French techniques and the chef’s creativity.

For lunch, a business menu is available at excellent prices. Important note: The portions at this restaurant are very small, though beautifully plated and delicious. I recommend ordering at least four courses per person.

Restaurant prices are higher than the average in Prague.

The Eatery

When I lived in the northern suburbs of Prague, I often passed through Holešovice, where we also run our summer food tour, Wall Street Food. While exploring the area, I discovered The Eatery, which quickly became my go-to spot for meetings and casual outings.

This bistro frequently changes its menu, offering innovative dishes without the use of gelatin or white smoke tricks. Chef Pavel Býček crafts incredible dishes without strictly defining his cooking style. Some dishes I liked less, but almost everything was excellent.

My most memorable dish was inspired by the Czech soup Kulajdaduxelles mushrooms on a tangy sour cream and dill sauce, served with roasted potatoes. This dish is perfect for dill lovers (and those willing to give it a try—it has a LOT of dill).

If you enjoy wine, take a look at their extensive wine list, which is on par with top restaurants.

Chef Lukáš, from one of my flagship food tour stops, told me last summer about the Ambiente group’s plan to open something new and modern in Prague. If you’ve been following my recommendations, you know I’ve tried all the major tasting menus in Prague and am always on the lookout for new experiences.

The chef of La Degustation, in collaboration with the Ambiente group, decided to create a bar-style dining experience, rather than a traditional restaurant.

In Dlouhá Street, we found a seemingly random, graffiti-covered door with a large green "B". With a sense of excitement, we stepped inside. Before us stood a large bar with about 20 seats, where chefs worked behind the counter, preparing small, creative dishes.

The venue is divided into a wine bar (open most of the day) and a chef’s bar.

The concept:

  • You prepay a fixed price.

  • You declare any dietary restrictions in advance.

  • Each dish arrives without explanation—you have to guess what’s on your plate.

  • You can opt for a wine pairing menu at a great price.

We chose a bottle of Hibernal 2021, a light and excellent Czech white wine that paired perfectly with all the dishes. To enhance the experience, we also opted for the wine pairing menu.

Field

Field is one of Prague’s top-rated restaurants, boasting a Michelin star for its modern, minimalist, and precise approach to fine dining. There are no unnecessary frills here—just pure, natural flavors that shine through in every dish.

Head Chef Radek Kašpárek has crafted a menu based on fresh, seasonal ingredients, blending traditional techniques like smoking and fermentation with innovative methods such as sous-vide and molecular foams. The dishes change with the seasons, but highlights often include roast duck with root vegetables, filet mignon with truffle, and roasted beetroot with herb cream.

The restaurant’s minimalist design creates a relaxed yet refined atmosphere, keeping the focus on the food. The service is impeccable, with knowledgeable staff who explain each dish in detail. The wine list features an excellent selection of Czech and international wines, carefully paired to complement the menu.

If you're looking for a high-end gourmet experience without unnecessary pretension, Field is the perfect choice. Expect seasonal, creative, and precisely executed cuisine that lets each ingredient shine.

Salabka

Salabka is a unique dining destination in Prague, set within a charming local winery that offers a picturesque, countryside atmosphere. The restaurant specializes in fine dining with a strong emphasis on presentation and aesthetics, serving beautifully arranged dishes alongside exclusive house-made wines. Every plate is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, featuring vibrant colors, intricate textures, and an artistic touch that makes each dish look like it belongs in a food magazine.

However, the flavors don’t always live up to the visual appeal. While the ingredients are fresh and the cooking is precise, some dishes feel more focused on appearance than on delivering bold or memorable tastes. For example, the filet mignon with root vegetables was visually striking but somewhat mild in flavor, and the sea bass with butter sauce was well-balanced but lacked an element of surprise. On the other hand, the wine pairings elevate the experience, and the desserts are well-executed, offering a delicate balance of sweetness and freshness.

Service at Salabka is professional and attentive, and the atmosphere is peaceful and elegant, with vineyard views adding to the charm. If you're looking for a beautiful setting with excellent wines and carefully curated dishes, Salabka is a great choice. Just keep in mind that while the presentation is top-tier, some dishes may leave you wanting a bit more depth in flavor.

Portfolio

Portfolio is one of Prague’s top fine dining restaurants, offering a high-end yet approachable gourmet experience. It strikes the perfect balance between modern creativity, advanced techniques, and refined simplicity, with a strong focus on seasonal, high-quality ingredients.

The atmosphere is elegant but relaxed, with a sleek, modern design that feels sophisticated without being overly formal. The service is exceptional, with staff that’s attentive, knowledgeable, and great at recommending wine pairings and menu choices tailored to each guest.

What makes Portfolio stand out is its ability to deliver an impressive dining experience without overcomplicating things. The food is beautifully presented, flavors are well-balanced, and every detail feels carefully thought out. It’s the ideal spot for a special evening out, where everything—from the ambiance to the service and the food—comes together in a seamless, high-quality experience.

Benjamin

A hidden Michelin-recommended gem in Prague.

This small, exclusive restaurant has been in Prague for years, yet it remains largely unknown due to its location outside the usual tourist areas. With just ten seats, reservations are essential.

We dined here for a midweek birthday celebration and were the only guests that evening—making it feel as if the entire restaurant was open just for us.

The meal is a tasting menu, featuring only Czech ingredients, prepared with modern cooking techniques. The restaurant also emphasizes fermentation, which gives the dishes a fresh and unique twist. The menu includes both meat and fish options, paired with some of the best wines we've had in Prague.

Yamato

One of Prague’s most highly awarded Japanese restaurants.

They are particularly known for their excellent sushi—in my opinion, the best in Prague. We chose the full tasting menu, which included multiple Japanese dishes before transitioning into a sushi course.
